About Caro
Hi! My name is Carolyn Scalan.
I am a certified All-Level Art Teacher in the state of Texas and Louisiana. I attended Louisiana Tech University and have a Bachelor’s Degree in Art Education.
I have taught elementary school Art in McKinney ISD and in Dallas ISD. Currently, I stay at home with my preschool age son, own and run my own art/pottery studio and am an Independent Future Director for the Pampered Chef. In the past year, I have learned to manage two businesses which I love and they both allow me the flexibility to do what I love, support my family financially, and be there for my family and pursue my dreams.
I love children and love teaching Art.
I have always loved pottery since I was a child. I would make pieces at a summer craft center that I went to in North Carolina. While in college, I took every art elective I could in the area of ceramics. I bought my 1st pottery wheel after my 2nd class, when I attended NCECA, a national ceramics conference in Fort Worth. After Forrester was born, I chose to stay home with him and it was my dream that when we bought our house to find a house where I could create and open up my studio where I can create pottery.
I also wanted to teach art to kids in a more personal environment which allowed more freedom. My art studio can be loud and is always messy but it is a place to have fun and be free in creating art. I love teaching kids art and sharing my love of art and pottery with kids and adults.
All of my pottery is handmade by me, with clay made here in the hill country of Austin, Texas. Each piece is unique, though I do duplicate some pieces. It is not easy for me to throw on the wheel though I love doing it therefore each of my wheel thrown pieces are unique and have their own mark of character on them, not perfect pieces, but each beautiful in their own way.
What I have found with selling my pottery, is that each of my pieces reaches a specific person- it might sit on my shelf for awhile but then that right person comes by and they fall in love with that piece and just have to have it. I love being able to share that bond with my customers.
I also love that knowing there are many potters out there and they might make bigger, more refined pieces than I do, but I do have return customers that coming looking for another piece in my pottery collection because they love the uniqueness of it.
I also feel like selling my pottery is selling a part of me, because those pieces reflect who I am, not perfect, a little quirky, a little crooked, a little short, and they are formed by my little hands and the strength that I have, putting all that I have in creating them.
